HyperFS File System

Overview

The HyperFS™ solution delivers a high-performance, massively scalable file system for data-intensive applications that generate enormous numbers of large files. HyperFS simplifies large file management, while providing high-speed, low-latency file access across a global repository, to meet the demands of any rich media environment.

With HyperFS, even the most pressing performance and scalability challenges are quickly, easily, and cost-effectively solved. Workflows run dramatically faster, clients can share data more efficiently, and storage management is no longer a burden. HyperFS enables organizations to:

  • Dramatically improve return on investment (ROI) by reducing storage capital and operational expenditures (CAPEX and OPEX)
  • Utilize storage resources more efficiently
  • Massively scale storage environments up to 144PB
  • Easily manage storage in a single consolidated pool

HyperFS optimizes storage performance by providing a single global name space, over 100 petabytes of easily scalable storage capacity, and multiple gigabyte transmission bandwidth. It supports massive data sets, single files as large as 32TB, and concurrent heterogeneous multi-user access. Running on any storage hardware, HyperFS provides full storage subsystem independence and support for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux clients.

Combining strong support with flexible deployment options, HyperFS is the ideal solution to meet the video and streaming workflow needs of the media and entertainment (M&E) industry. See for yourself how HyperFS can deliver hundreds of high-definition (HD) streams and thousands of standard-definition (SD) streams in one unified solution.

Key Benefits

Dramatically reduces capital CAPEX and OPEX, maximizing ROI
By consolidating storage and content management into a single namespace and centralizing disparate storage resources into a single pool, HyperFS minimizes the inefficient use of storage, allowing organizations to employ a completely hardware-independent, “pay-as-you-grow” procurement strategy.

Massive scalability
Scalable to 144PB of data with support for billions of large files, HyperFS meets the demands of customers in industries such as media & entertainment (M&E). New capacity is added transparently and non-disruptively, which keeps operations on-time and on-budget.

Delivers high performance and low latency to optimize rich media specific workflows
HyperFS delivers the performance, low latency, and optimized bandwidth required by today’s high definition media formats, such as 3D, 2K, 4K, 8K, and HD. Providing up to 90% of the underlying storage hardware’s wire speed, HyperFS allows administrators to tune the performance of volume groups to match an application’s specific demands. Streaming workflow performance accommodates hundreds and even thousands of simultaneous streams.

Unmatched consolidation and management
With HyperFS, hundreds of Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X clients can share concurrent access to files in a single storage pool. The HyperFS solution lowers the risk of errors and lost or corrupted files, minimizing file transfers and revisions.

Features

High-performance, Low-latency File System
Optimized for the performance and latency file I/O requirements of today’s digital media formats (HD, 2K, 4K, 8K, and 3D). Achieves up to 90% of the underlying storage hardware wire speeds and delivers >20GB per second performance, meeting the most demanding workflow and streaming needs. The file system can be tuned to meet the specific performance requirements of different applications.

Massive Scalability for Media-centric Organizations
HyperFS scales to 144PB in a single global namespace, delivering massive scalability for post, video-on-demand, broadcast, and media-centric environments, while reducing CAPEX and OPEX through storage consolidation.

Heterogeneous Client Support
Simultaneous sharing and concurrent access of hundreds (up to 800) of files for Microsoft Windows Mac OS X, and Linux clients. Optimizes capacity utilization, shrinks overall storage footprint, and eliminates the need to manage, support, and purchase disparate storage systems.

Supports Billions of Objects/Files per File System
Designed for large volumes of high-capacity files, HyperFS enables all clients to access files securely and concurrently.

SAN-based Storage Pools with Block-level Virtualization
Provides high-performance block-based throughput, providing much faster data and application processing than moving data over the LAN. Allows storage administrators to leverage storage investments from different vendors into a single consolidated pool.

Up to 32TB per Single File
HyperFS is designed for workflow environments, such as the most modern of editing systems, where single frames may be very large single files.

Hardware Independence
Reduces storage CAPEX with an open, hardware-agnostic design. Administrators can combine storage from different vendors into a consolidated pool with a single point of management, reducing storage OPEX and management complexity.

Dedicated Two-node Active/Passive Metadata Cluster
A clustered, fault-tolerant design supports a high availability storage architecture. Optimizes performance with separate metadata and storage data paths, which provides direct I/O data flow from clients to SAN storage without metadata overhead.

Dynamic Capacity Expansion
Enables you to add new storage capacity transparently and non-disruptively without interrupting workflow I/O.

POSIX-compliant Journaling File System with File Locking and Sharing Support
Seamlessly access objects/files in the file system with industry-standard applications. Files can be securely shared across heterogeneous clients. Journaling keeps file systems up-and-running and allows near-instant recovery from shutdowns or outages.

Multiple Volume Groups
Flexibility to group and allocate different storage LUNs to specific applications. Performance levels can be adjusted on a volume group basis to match different application demands.
